When Your Guardian Angel Can’t Quite Make It in the Door…

My father was losing his battle to colon cancer; we all said our goodbyes, cried countless tears, and took turns sitting by his side. As we rolled into the second week of watching my strong, stubborn dad hold on, the hospice team suggested that maybe he needed some time alone. Perhaps he needed some peace and quiet to move on from this life.

With this suggestion made, my sisters, Mom, and I divided our attention and attempted to give him some space. Mom went to the back room to wrap gifts (because, of course, it was the week before Christmas), one sister went to the office to get some work done, my other sister tried to take a nap in the guest room, and I headed home to check on Hubby and the kids.

After a couple of hours, I verified that my house was still standing and my family was doing okay, so I headed back to Mom and Dad’s. When I arrived at the front door, there was a bird just sitting there like a tiny, feathered, slightly-dazed sentry.

The bird didn’t move as I approached, but I could tell it was still alive. After passing the bird’s glassy-eyed station, I stepped inside and announced its stupified presence on the stoop.

My sister, who had returned to Dad’s bedside, replied, “Yeah, we thought it was Dad’s angel coming to get him, but it couldn’t get through the door.”

When Trash Talk = Love

Have you ever loved someone enough to stand in front of a crowd of family, friends, and coworkers and bash that person? Have you shared stories of their failures, personal problems, and, most likely, their greatest insecurities?

Well, I have.

Did it feel good?

It absolutely did.

What is wrong with me?

Nothing.

What’s wrong with my little sister?

Apparently, a lot of things.

To celebrate my sister reaching a monumental age, my brother-in-law planned a Toast and Roast.

He invited guests to gift my sister with sarcasm, trash talk, and general degradation of her character.

It was phenomenal!

Who knew that slander and verbal abuse could bring people together in such a glorious light?!?

After the roasters had laid out their lines of laughable insult, the birthday girl was given a turn to bash them back.

As my sister took the stage, I was slightly fearful that the roasts had burned a little too deep. She walked up and said, “This was the weirdest birthday party I’ve ever had, so, uh, I guess, thanks?”

Pansies in a Tin Cup: Memory in a Tattoo

Have you ever noticed someone’s tattoo and thought, “That’s different. I wonder why they got that?”

Interesting enough, it is because of an artist’s willingness to talk to three, crazy ladies sitting at a bar, that I came to see such a tattoo and definitely wanted to know the story behind it.

The artist’s name was Maddy. One of the three crazy ladies at the bar was me.

Maddy’s intriguing tattoo was pansies in a tin cup.

The story behind the tattoo stared when Maddy’s grandparents Kerry and Nancy welcomed the first of their six children into the world. Kerry wanted to surprise his wife with flowers after the birth of their son. He did not have money to purchase long-stem roses or a fancy arrangement from the flower shop, so he gathered a handful of pansies and delivered them to his bride in a tin cup from their pantry. The sentiment was well received and continues to be a story of simplicity and love passed down to their children and grandchildren.

“Like There’s No Such Thing As a Broken Heart”: Lyrics to Live By

broken heart

Rarely is there a day goes by that Old Dominion’s “No Such Thing as a Broken Heart”  isn’t played on the radio. (At least I hear it almost every day.)  Every time the track plays, I feel like they are singing right to me.

What songs out there grab you this way?

There are so many positive elements to this song that I don’t know if I could effectively convey its power in one post so I’m going to just give the chorus some attention here.

“You can’t keep the ground from shaking, no matter how hard you try, you can’t keep the sunsets from fading, you gotta treat your love like you’re jumping off a rope swing maybe ’cause the whole thing is really just a shot in the dark.” Continue reading ““Like There’s No Such Thing As a Broken Heart”: Lyrics to Live By”
