I’m OK With Being a Bench Warmer

This student bench is my newest antique find. (Thank you, Craigslist and Nancy!)

A small bench was just what I was looking for to add to our home. Something I could set flowers, crocks, or books on. Something to add just a little more coziness. The fact that it is a bench from an antique student desk makes it perfect (me being a teacher and all).

I have big plans for warming this bench.

Since making the decision to take a step away from full-time teaching last spring, I have struggled with my role in the lives of so many people I love. I feel strongly for my former students and their families. I want to be there to help them succeed, but since school started this fall I have had a few more minutes to myself and I am realizing that it was a very healthy decision. I’m OK with being a bench warmer.

This particular bench is just a small part of my bench warmer status because it represents my ability to now have time for my home. I am able to prepare snacks and meals for my family with a little less chaos. Carrying out the operations of our family farm is much more manageable. My time spent on our home isn’t just about keeping it standing now, it is about making a more beautiful place to live.

Transitioning to part-time employment outside of the home is not an option for most people. I really do know just how blessed I am. However, we can all make time to be bench warmers. A few quiet moments during the day can help you put the game into perspective. Allowing yourself to take a breather from the rat race of daily living will give you the freedom to really live. Inspiration for a more beautiful life can be found in the stillness of a moment.

Be a bench warmer. It’s OK!
